Synology 1621+ Versus Asustor Lockstor 6510T
Quote from Mike on May 31, 2025, 6:50 amI bought the Synology NAS in 2022 and have had no issues with the Nas itself. There have been a few minor issues with it.
- the Drive bays if not locked down will fail to lock in place after prolonged hard drive heat. The work around for this issue is to use the key to lock the bays closed. if they are not locked closed. the little latches that hold it in the closed position will melt off or break off from the heat. and them open up and cause alarms.
- I have only had 1 heard drive fail since i had the unit. it was not the fault of Synology and replacing it save all the data I had as it repaired itself.
Asustor 6510T
This system looked great on amazon when I bought it. This was short lived though.
- when transferring large amounts of files 2TB or more. The Asustor loses connection to the Ethernet connection. as of 05/30/2025 there is no known fix as of yet. Disabling IP V6 seems to help stabilize the disconnects. ( i am still looking for some sort of fix for this. as of 05/30/2025)
- This ADM 5.0 is missing a lot of needed features and is not as user friendly as synology. one area it seems to have failed some is with Portainer/ Docker installing and setting up is not as easy as it is on synology.
- ezconnect is not that easy. It will fail to connect even if you have proper port forwards. and proper configuring. Its more of a hit and miss.some times it works. when it fails you have to rebooot the nas to get it to start working again. This is still happening since i updates to ADM 5.0
Over all. I know i can install truenas on Asustor. If I can install the synology DSM on this unit. I would be overjoyed. I will update if and when this happens
In short, I am disappointed with Asustor at this time. I would have returned the unit by now, but I have owned it too long. and tried to find a fix for it. For now I will have to wait and see if Asustor issues an update that addresses these issues.
